Cursor

AI code editor + agents · Cursor

An AI code editor with an in-editor agent, a CLI agent and cloud agents, plus a built-in browser tool and MCP support.

What it is

Cursor is an AI code editor. Its agent plans and applies changes across a codebase, runs terminal commands and can control a built-in browser. The same agent runs in a CLI, and cloud agents take tasks in the background using a team's MCP servers.

  • CLI: Agent in the terminal, shares mcp.json source ↗
  • Cloud agents: Background tasks with team MCP servers source ↗

What it's best at

  • Day-to-day coding inside an editor with an agent alongside
  • Testing UI changes with the built-in browser tool
  • Handing tasks to cloud agents
  • Adding MCP servers from a marketplace

How it works

  1. Open a repo in the editor and ask the agent for a change; review the diff.
  2. Add MCP servers through mcp.json or the marketplace; the CLI agent shares the same configuration.
  3. The browser tool lets the agent open pages, read console and network output, and click through flows; admins can allowlist origins.
  4. Cloud agents run tasks remotely and can use team MCP servers (HTTP or stdio).

Ideal use cases

  • Build and update a marketing site, then check it in the browser tool
  • Connect GitHub, PostHog, ClickUp or Railway through MCP while coding
  • Send a well-scoped task to a cloud agent
  • Build a Markdown editor or dictation tool (see Build your own)

Limits

  • Agent changes need review; keep tests and pull requests.
  • Plan limits and model access vary by plan.
  • Browser-tool access can be restricted by an admin allowlist.
