Organize tax documents with Claude, then file in FreeTaxUSA
Ops & admin automation · checked 2026-10-17
A document-prep workflow for FreeTaxUSA (IonBin’s founder filed a 2024 return with it): Claude turns redacted copies of your W-2s and 1099s into a checklist of forms, totals and missing documents. You upload the originals to FreeTaxUSA’s import, check every field yourself and e-file. Claude never files and its output does not import.
Independent review. IonBin has no partnership with any tool on this page and was not paid for this page. Our evaluation is our own, based on public documentation and our research. Product names are trademarks of their owners and are used for identification only. How disclosure works.
Goal
Walk into tax filing with every form accounted for and the numbers cross-checked, without handing an AI your unredacted documents.
Connects through: Upload / export
Not advice
IonBin provides general information and software comparisons, not tax, legal, accounting or financial advice. Tax and legal rules vary by situation and jurisdiction; consult a qualified professional (CPA, enrolled agent or attorney) before acting.
AI tools can make mistakes. Verify every figure against the original documents and official IRS or state guidance before filing or signing.
Redact Social Security numbers, account numbers and EINs before uploading documents to any AI assistant, and check its data-retention settings. Upload originals only to the filing or signing software.
“Free” offers come with conditions: check who qualifies and what state filing costs before you start. IRS Direct File is discontinued for the 2026 season with no relaunch date; see IRS Free File for eligible filers.

Gather W-2, 1099 and last year’s return PDFs, and make redacted copies (remove SSNs, account numbers and EINs)
Compare every imported field against the originals and Claude’s checklist, then e-file yourself
Human step
Confirmed
Confirmed means the vendor documents it (linked). It doesn't mean IonBin has tested it. AI-platform and human steps need no source.
Human approval
You review every field and e-file yourself in FreeTaxUSA. Claude only produces a checklist from redacted copies.
Watch out for
Never upload unredacted documents to a chat. Claude can misread figures, so check every number against the originals before you file.
Starter prompt
I’m preparing my own tax return. Attached are REDACTED copies of my W-2s, 1099s and last year’s return. Build a checklist table: each form, issuer, key totals, and any form that appeared last year but is missing now. Flag anything that looks inconsistent. Do not give tax advice or tell me what to claim; I will review everything and file myself.

Pricing note
FreeTaxUSA lists a $0 federal return and a $15.99 state return for 2025 returns (checked 2026-10-17). Check the current price and what your situation needs before you start. IRS.gov also lists IRS Free File guided software for an adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less, if you qualify.
What we checked
Import. FreeTaxUSA says you can upload W-2s and 1099s (a photo or PDF) and last year’s return to auto-fill your new return, including a PDF of a return filed with other tax software.
No API or MCP server. We found none for FreeTaxUSA, so Claude’s checklist does not import into the return. You use it as a reference while you check each imported field.
Redaction. Claude only ever sees the redacted copies. The originals go straight to FreeTaxUSA.
Why it works
Claude is good at the tedious part, which is reconciling a stack of forms into one list. FreeTaxUSA’s PDF import does the data entry. You stay in charge of what gets filed.
