Summarize sensitive documents locally with Ollama

Document & knowledge preparation · Personal AI context · checked 2026-10-18

You run an open model on your own computer with Ollama, turn off its cloud features, and summarize documents that shouldn't leave the machine. You check each summary against the source.

Goal

Get summaries of confidential files without sending them to a hosted AI service.

Steps

  1. You

Install Ollama, download a model and turn off cloud features before adding any documents

    Human stepConfirmed
  2. Ollama

Runs the model locally and answers through the local API on localhost

    APIConfirmedSource ↗
  3. You

Read each summary against the original and correct it

    Human stepConfirmed

Confirmed means the vendor documents it (linked). It doesn't mean IonBin has tested it. AI-platform and human steps need no source.

Human approval

Every summary is checked against the original before it is used.

Watch out for

Small local models miss details and can invent them. Quote figures and dates and check them. Ollama also offers cloud models, so confirm cloud features are off before you start, and don't expose the local API to other machines.

Starter prompt

Summarize the document below in 8 bullet points for an internal reader. Quote the exact sentence for any figure or deadline, and say 'not stated' instead of guessing.

Which AI platforms can run it

PlatformStatusWhy
Claude (incl. Claude Code) To verify Ollama: verify the API caller, network access and credentials; platform code execution alone does not establish this connection
OpenAI Codex To verify Ollama: verify the API caller, network access and credentials; platform code execution alone does not establish this connection
Google Antigravity To verify Ollama: verify the API caller, network access and credentials; platform code execution alone does not establish this connection
ChatGPT To verify Ollama: verify the API caller, network access and credentials; platform code execution alone does not establish this connection
Gemini To verify Ollama: verify the API caller, network access and credentials; platform code execution alone does not establish this connection
Perplexity To verify Ollama: verify the API caller, network access and credentials; platform code execution alone does not establish this connection

Readiness considers the connection evidence and unresolved steps. Confirmed: documented access and the proposed steps meet the recorded requirements. MCP and API pairings require an explicit reviewed platform note; a named plugin or CLI alone does not confirm MCP. Inferred: an explicit page note describes a plausible pairing that still needs testing. To verify: a connection or step is unresolved. An API and code execution alone do not establish compatible network access, credentials or permissions. None of this is IonBin testing.

What we checked (2026-10-18)

  • Local-only mode. Ollama’s FAQ says it can run in local-only mode with cloud features disabled, either with disable_ollama_cloud in ~/.ollama/server.json or the OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 environment variable, followed by a restart. Cloud models and web search are then unavailable.
  • Local API. The local API doesn’t need an API key and listens on localhost by default. Making it reachable from other machines means changing OLLAMA_HOST, which needs deliberate access controls.

Set it up

  1. Install Ollama and download the model you want while connected.
  2. Set OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1, or the server.json setting, and restart Ollama.
  3. Paste one document at a time with the prompt above.
  4. Check every summary against the original, especially numbers, names and dates.

Pilot it on a small sample first, and keep the human step even when the output looks right. This is a proposed sequence based on documented tools, not a tested account integration.
