Watch out for
An export can contain sensitive conversations and account data; it is not guaranteed to include every past chat or recover deleted chats. Strip sensitive chats before uploading, and delete the file when you're done.

Here is my exported chat history. Tag each conversation with the task type, where your answer missed, and what I corrected. Then list the ten most common patterns and draft custom instructions under 1,500 characters that address them. Do not include personal details from the chats.

What we checked (2026-10-18)
Claude export. Individual users on Free, Pro and Max export from Settings > Privacy on the web app or Claude Desktop. You can’t run an export from the iOS or Android app. A download link arrives by email. Team and Enterprise members can export their own chats when an Owner enables it; Primary Owners use the organization export. Those member exports exclude uploaded-file contents.
ChatGPT export. Go to Settings > Data controls > Export data, then confirm. ChatGPT sends an email or SMS when the file is ready, which can take up to 7 days, and the link expires 24 hours after it arrives. Business, Enterprise and Healthcare workspaces do not offer self-service export. Eligible Edu workspaces depend on administrator settings and role.
Why it can help. Anthropic’s engineering team writes that getting good results is less about finding the right words and more about giving the model the right context. Your own history is one source of that context.
Not measured. IonBin has not measured whether this process improves answers; the inspiration reel could not be retrieved during this audit. Compare a week of answers before and after.
Set it up
Export your data, then delete anything sensitive from the file before you upload it.
Tag in batches if the file is large, and keep the tags short (task, miss, correction).
Keep the new instructions short, paste them in yourself and revisit them after two weeks.
Delete the export once you’re done.
