Follow up on failed payments
Ops & admin automation · checked 2026-10-16
Turn on Stripe’s built-in retries and failed-payment emails first. Add this flow when you want your own wording: a failed-payment event triggers a drafted email for approval, sent through Resend.

Not advice
IonBin provides general information and software comparisons, not tax, legal, accounting or financial advice. Tax and legal rules vary by situation and jurisdiction; consult a qualified professional (CPA, enrolled agent or attorney) before acting.
AI tools can make mistakes. Verify every figure against the original documents and official IRS or state guidance before filing or signing.
Redact Social Security numbers, account numbers and EINs before uploading documents to any AI assistant, and check its data-retention settings. Upload originals only to the filing or signing software.
Confirmed means the vendor documents it (linked). It doesn't mean IonBin has tested it. AI-platform and human steps need no source.

Starter prompt
Goal: Recover revenue from failed cards without awkward manual chasing. Tools involved: Stripe, Resend. Your part: drafts the email from your template. Work step by step, show me each draft or proposed change, and wait for my approval before anything is sent, published, signed, filed or changed in a live system.

What we checked
Stripe Billing can retry failed subscription and invoice payments automatically. Stripe recommends Smart Retries, and you can set a custom retry schedule instead. Stripe won’t retry when the issuer returns a hard decline code. Stripe can also email customers when a payment fails so they can correct it, and it recommends turning on at least payment confirmation and failed-payment emails. Leaving those built-in options out would make this workflow look necessary when it often isn’t, so check them first. A custom flow makes sense when you want your own tone, an approval step or a personal note for large accounts. Stripe sends failed-payment events to webhooks, and Resend’s API sends the email.
Set it up
In Stripe, turn on Smart Retries and failed-payment emails, then decide whether you still need this flow.
Point a webhook (or a Make or n8n trigger) at failed-payment events.
Have your AI platform draft the email from your approved template.
Approve the template once, and individual sends for large accounts.
Send through Resend’s API and log the outcome on the customer record.
