Set ad targets from break-even ROAS

Business data & reporting · checked 2026-10-17

Export margins from QuickBooks, compute break-even ROAS (1 / gross margin) per product line with Wolfram or a script, and ask Claude to compare your current Target ROAS settings against it. You change bids yourself.

Confirmed means the vendor documents it (linked). It doesn't mean IonBin has tested it. AI-platform and human steps need no source.

Human approval

You make every bid change.

Watch out for

Break-even ignores fixed costs and lifetime value; it is a floor, not a goal. Not financial advice.

Starter prompt

For each product line, break-even ROAS = 1 / gross margin. Compare that with my current Target ROAS settings ({list}) and list any target that is below break-even, with the gap.

Claude (incl. Claude Code) Confirmed Every MCP and API step is documented for this platform.
OpenAI Codex Confirmed Every MCP and API step is documented for this platform.
Google Antigravity Confirmed Every MCP and API step is documented for this platform.
ChatGPT Confirmed Every MCP and API step is documented for this platform.
Gemini To verify Wolfram: code execution to verify (or run it in Make or n8n)
Perplexity To verify Wolfram: code execution to verify (or run it in Make or n8n)

Computed from the MCP and API steps only: "Confirmed" needs the tool's docs to name the platform and the platform to support the connection. Browser, upload and human steps work from any platform.

What we checked (2026-10-17)

Google Ads says Target ROAS can maximize conversion value, such as sales revenue or profit margins, while aiming for your target return on ad spend, and that you need conversion values set before you can use it. From June 2026 Google labels “Maximize conversion value with a Target ROAS” simply as “Target ROAS”. The Wolfram|Alpha LLM API takes a query and an AppID from the Wolfram developer portal; for a single division per product line, a short script is equally reliable. The arithmetic is simple: at a 40% gross margin, break-even ROAS is 1 / 0.40 = 2.5. See POAS.

Set it up

  1. Export gross margin by product line for a recent period from your accounting tool.
  2. Compute 1 / margin for each line with Wolfram or a script, never by eye in a chat.
  3. Paste the results and your current campaign targets into Claude and ask it to flag any target below break-even.
  4. Decide on changes yourself and make them in the ad platform.

This workflow explains a metric. It isn’t financial, tax or accounting advice; check margins with your accountant.
