Run a weekly SEO check with Ahrefs MCP and Search Console

Marketing content & social · Business data & reporting · checked 2026-10-18

Claude pulls ranking and backlink changes from Ahrefs' hosted MCP server, you add the Search Console performance export, and Claude writes a short weekly SEO note. You decide what to fix.

Goal

Notice ranking drops and lost links early, using both third-party and Google data.

Connects through: MCP

Steps

  1. Ahrefs

Returns keyword ranking and backlink changes for your site through the Ahrefs MCP server

    MCPConfirmedSource ↗
  2. You

Export last week's Search Console performance report and share it with Claude

    Human stepConfirmed
  3. Claude

Compares the two sources and drafts a note of pages to check

    AI platformConfirmed
  4. You

Check the pages and decide what to change

    Human stepConfirmed

Confirmed means the vendor documents it (linked). It doesn't mean IonBin has tested it. AI-platform and human steps need no source.

Human approval

You choose the fixes. Nothing on your site is changed.

Watch out for

Ahrefs data is an estimate from its own crawl, and Search Console reflects Google's own data. They won't match. Each Ahrefs plan has a row limit per request and a monthly allowance of API units, so keep queries narrow.

Starter prompt

Using the Ahrefs MCP server, list keywords for our domain whose position dropped by 3 or more this week and any referring domains lost. Then use the Search Console export I attach to check clicks and impressions for the same pages. Write a note of no more than 200 words listing pages to check first.

Tools in this workflow

Which AI platforms can run it

PlatformStatusWhy
Claude (incl. Claude Code) To verify Ahrefs: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it
OpenAI Codex To verify Ahrefs: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it
Google Antigravity To verify Ahrefs: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it
ChatGPT To verify Ahrefs: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it
Gemini To verify Ahrefs: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it
Perplexity To verify Ahrefs: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it

Readiness considers the connection evidence and unresolved steps. Confirmed: documented access and the proposed steps meet the recorded requirements. MCP and API pairings require an explicit reviewed platform note; a named plugin or CLI alone does not confirm MCP. Inferred: an explicit page note describes a plausible pairing that still needs testing. To verify: a connection or step is unresolved. An API and code execution alone do not establish compatible network access, credentials or permissions. None of this is IonBin testing.

What we checked (2026-10-18)

  • Ahrefs MCP. Ahrefs hosts a remote MCP server at https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcp for paid plans from Lite. Each plan caps the rows per request and includes a limited monthly number of API units.
  • Search Console. IonBin found no official Search Console MCP server, so this workflow uses a manual export. Search Console also offers a BigQuery export, which needs a billing-enabled Google Cloud project and starts from setup without history.

Set it up

  1. Connect the Ahrefs MCP server in Claude with a Lite or higher account.
  2. Each Monday, export last week’s Search Console performance by page.
  3. Run the prompt above with the export attached.
  4. Check the flagged pages in a browser and in Search Console before changing anything.

Pilot it on a small sample first, and keep the human step even when the output looks right. This is a proposed sequence based on documented tools, not a tested account integration.
