Hand clean books to your tax filing

Ops & admin automation · Business data & reporting · checked 2026-10-17

Pull a profit-and-loss report from QuickBooks through its MCP server, have Claude flag odd categorizations, fix them in QuickBooks, and then use the reviewed report when you file yourself or hand it to your CPA.

Not advice

IonBin provides general information and software comparisons, not tax, legal, accounting or financial advice. Tax and legal rules vary by situation and jurisdiction; consult a qualified professional (CPA, enrolled agent or attorney) before acting.

AI tools can make mistakes. Verify every figure against the original documents and official IRS or state guidance before filing or signing.

Redact Social Security numbers, account numbers and EINs before uploading documents to any AI assistant, and check its data-retention settings. Upload originals only to the filing or signing software.

“Free” offers come with conditions: check who qualifies and what state filing costs before you start. IRS Direct File is discontinued for the 2026 season with no relaunch date; see IRS Free File for eligible filers.

What we checked

  • QuickBooks Online MCP is Intuit’s open-source local server. It offers create, read, update, delete and search for 29 entity types, including invoices, bills and accounts, plus 11 reports, among them profit and loss. You need your own Intuit Developer app and a one-time browser sign-in; Intuit’s hosted AI pilot is by invitation only.
  • Hand-off. We didn’t verify a direct QuickBooks Online to TurboTax import for this workflow, so the hand-off is manual: you enter figures from the reviewed P&L in your tax software, or send the report to your CPA.
  • Claude’s role is to flag categories that look inconsistent and to draft questions. It doesn’t change your books. You make every fix in QuickBooks.

Set it up

  1. Connect the QuickBooks Online MCP server to Claude using your own Intuit Developer app.
  2. Ask for the year’s profit and loss and the transactions behind any category that looks large or unusual.
  3. Have Claude list transactions whose category looks inconsistent, with a reason for each, and draft questions for your CPA.
  4. Fix categories in QuickBooks yourself, then pull the P&L again.
  5. File yourself or send the final report to your CPA.
