Ask product questions of your Supabase database in read-only mode

Business data & reporting · Dev, web & IT · checked 2026-10-18

Claude answers product questions with SQL through Supabase's hosted MCP server, scoped to one project and set to read-only. You check the query and the result before sharing them.

Goal

Answer quick product questions from your own data without giving an agent write access.

Steps

  1. You

Connect the Supabase MCP server scoped to one project, with read-only mode on

    Human stepConfirmed
  2. Supabase

Runs the read-only SQL queries Claude writes through the MCP server

    MCPConfirmedSource ↗
  3. Claude

Answers each question and shows the SQL it used

    AI platformConfirmed
  4. You

Check the query logic and the numbers before sharing them

    Human stepConfirmed

Confirmed means the vendor documents it (linked). It doesn't mean IonBin has tested it. AI-platform and human steps need no source.

Human approval

Answers are shared only after you check the SQL and the result.

Watch out for

Read-only mode and project scoping are settings in the server URL, so check them before connecting. Supabase says its destructive-SQL confirmation isn't a security guarantee. Use a read replica or a staging copy if production is sensitive.

Starter prompt

Using the Supabase MCP server, answer: how many accounts signed up last week, and how many of them created a first project within 3 days? Show the SQL, explain any assumptions about table names, and don't change any data.

Which AI platforms can run it

PlatformStatusWhy
Claude (incl. Claude Code) To verify Supabase: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it
OpenAI Codex To verify Supabase: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it
Google Antigravity To verify Supabase: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it
ChatGPT To verify Supabase: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it
Gemini To verify Supabase: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it
Perplexity To verify Supabase: MCP pairing needs route-specific evidence; a named plugin or CLI does not establish it

Readiness considers the connection evidence and unresolved steps. Confirmed: documented access and the proposed steps meet the recorded requirements. MCP and API pairings require an explicit reviewed platform note; a named plugin or CLI alone does not confirm MCP. Inferred: an explicit page note describes a plausible pairing that still needs testing. To verify: a connection or step is unresolved. An API and code execution alone do not establish compatible network access, credentials or permissions. None of this is IonBin testing.

What we checked (2026-10-18)

  • Hosted MCP server. Supabase lets you scope the server to one project. If no project is chosen, all projects can be reached. A read-only option is available, and project-scoped mode disables account tools such as creating or pausing projects.
  • Guardrails. Supabase says execute_sql and apply_migration ask for confirmation when they detect destructive SQL, outside read-only mode. Some SQL isn’t classified as destructive, and Supabase says the check isn’t a security guarantee.

Set it up

  1. Build the server URL with your project and read-only mode selected, then connect it in Claude.
  2. Write down how key metrics are defined, such as what counts as a signup.
  3. Ask your questions and read each SQL query before trusting the answer.
  4. Save the queries you trust so the next answer starts from them.

Pilot it on a small sample first, and keep the human step even when the output looks right. This is a proposed sequence based on documented tools, not a tested account integration.
