Answer weekly KPI questions from Metabase with an AI client
Business data & reporting · checked 2026-10-18
An admin turns on Metabase's built-in MCP server. Claude answers a fixed list of KPI questions within your Metabase permissions, and a person checks each number against the saved dashboard before sharing.

Goal
Answer recurring metric questions quickly without granting extra data access.
Connects through: MCP
Steps
01
You
Ask a Metabase admin to enable the MCP server and agree a fixed list of KPI questions
Writes a short answer for each question, naming the table or saved question it used
AI platformConfirmed
04
You
Check each figure against the matching saved dashboard before sharing
Human stepConfirmed
Confirmed means the vendor documents it (linked). It doesn't mean IonBin has tested it. AI-platform and human steps need no source.
Human approval
Numbers are shared only after you check them against Metabase.
Watch out for
An AI-written query can use the wrong table or filter and still return a number that looks right. Prefer existing saved questions, keep each metric's definition written down, and check numbers before they leave the team.
Starter prompt
Using the Metabase MCP server, answer these questions for last week compared with the week before: [your list]. Where a saved question or dashboard already covers a question, use it. For each answer, give the number, the comparison and the saved question or table you used. If you're not sure a query matches the definition, say so instead of guessing.

Readiness considers the connection evidence and unresolved steps. Confirmed: documented access and the proposed steps meet the recorded requirements. MCP and API pairings require an explicit reviewed platform note; a named plugin or CLI alone does not confirm MCP. Inferred: an explicit page note describes a plausible pairing that still needs testing. To verify: a connection or step is unresolved. An API and code execution alone do not establish compatible network access, credentials or permissions. None of this is IonBin testing.
What we checked (2026-10-18)
Metabase MCP server. Metabase’s docs describe an MCP server built into the product at /api/metabase-mcp on your instance. An admin has to turn it on, and each person’s access stays within their own Metabase permissions.
Plans. The pricing page lists Open Source as free to self-host, Starter at $100 a month ($90 billed yearly) with 5 users included, and Pro at $575 a month. Check whether your edition and version include the MCP server before you plan around it.
Set it up
Ask your Metabase admin to enable the MCP server, and connect Claude with your own Metabase account.
Write down the KPI questions and the saved question that defines each metric.
Each week, run the prompt above with that list.
Open the matching dashboard and compare. Fix any definition that drifted before you share the summary.
This is a proposed sequence based on documented tools, not a tested account integration.
