Set up payroll with a checklist

Ops & admin automation · checked 2026-10-17

Claude drafts a payroll setup checklist from your situation, you complete it in OnPay, and you use Wolfram in Claude only to check arithmetic on estimates before verifying inside OnPay.

You verify everything inside OnPay before running payroll.

Keep the human approval step: You verify everything inside OnPay before running payroll.

What we checked

  • OnPay lists payroll at $49 a month plus $6 per worker (checked 2026-10-17). OnPay says every plan includes W-2s, 1099s and year-end filings, unlimited pay runs, and federal, state and local tax filings. It has no MCP server, and its API is for approved partners, so setup happens in OnPay itself.
  • Wolfram Cloud MCP (https://agenttools.wolfram.com/mcp) needs no sign-in and costs nothing, per Wolfram. Use it to check arithmetic on your own estimates, such as gross-to-net for a sample pay period. OnPay’s own calculations are the ones that count.
  • Accounting integrations. We didn’t check which accounting tools OnPay connects to. Look at OnPay’s integrations page if you need payroll to post to your books.

Set it up

  1. Ask Claude for a setup checklist based on your situation: registrations to confirm, pay schedule, deductions and benefits.
  2. Work through it in OnPay and tick items off as you go.
  3. Use Wolfram in Claude to sanity-check sample calculations.
  4. Run a test payroll review in OnPay before the first real run.
