Control which provider runs your AI model
Business data & reporting · Ops & admin automation · checked 2026-10-18
Choose a model separately from its host. Use OpenRouter to restrict eligible providers, set fallback behavior and require supported parameters, then run the same evaluation cases before accepting the route. This is a documented pattern awaiting a hands-on test.

Goal
Produce a reviewed routing configuration and evidence that it preserves task quality and provider constraints.
Connects through: API
Steps
01
You
Approve the task, representative test cases, allowed hosts, data conditions and spending limit
Run the fixed evaluation cases and inspect the serving-provider, error, quality, latency and cost evidence
Human acceptance step in the proposed method, not a test already completed by IonBin.
Human stepConfirmed
04
You
Review failures and approve the route only if it satisfies the task and access constraints
Human stepConfirmed
Confirmed means the vendor documents it (linked). It doesn't mean IonBin has tested it. AI-platform and human steps need no source.
Human approval
The application owner approves allowed endpoints, fallback scope and evaluation results before production use.
Watch out for
A preferred provider is not an exclusive provider. Keep the allowlist explicit and inspect the host that actually served each request.
Starter prompt
Using this approved test set and provider policy, propose an OpenRouter routing configuration. State the exact model and endpoint slugs, fallback boundary, required parameters and expected failures. Do not send requests or spend credits until I approve the test.

Readiness considers the connection evidence and unresolved steps. Confirmed: documented access and the proposed steps meet the recorded requirements. MCP and API pairings require an explicit reviewed platform note; a named plugin or CLI alone does not confirm MCP. Inferred: an explicit page note describes a plausible pairing that still needs testing. To verify: a connection or step is unresolved. An API and code execution alone do not establish compatible network access, credentials or permissions. None of this is IonBin testing.
Before you start
Check the current plan table and FAQ: preferred-provider selection is listed on Standard and above, while the FAQ says ZDR routing is available on every plan. Choose a model and eligible endpoint from the live catalog. An aggregator adds another party to the request path; approve both the router and the host for the intended data.
Configure the boundary
Use provider.only to limit eligible providers and provider.order to express preference. Decide whether fallback within that boundary is useful. Set require_parameters: true when dropping an unsupported parameter would invalidate the task. Copy full endpoint slugs where variants matter. These are documented controls, not a guarantee that the model will produce valid answers.
The data_collection: "deny" and zdr: true filters address different provider-policy conditions. OpenRouter’s ZDR definition permits certain in-memory prompt caching; it is not a promise that no processing or metadata exists. Check the current provider agreement rather than treating a badge as approval.
Test the route
Keep a small, human-reviewed test set with ordinary cases, difficult cases and inputs that should fail. Run an initial baseline and the proposed configuration against identical cases. For every result, save the requested model, actual host, configuration revision, quality score, elapsed time, usage cost and error state. Redact sensitive material from logs.
Deliberately test an unavailable allowed endpoint, an unsupported required capability and a request that has no policy-compliant route. The application should surface the failure without silently widening the boundary. Compare answer quality as well as success rate. Re-run the cases after changes to the model, prompts or routing configuration.
Optional discovery through MCP
OpenRouter’s official MCP server can help a coding assistant inspect models and submit small test prompts. Those inference calls can spend credits. It is a development aid; use the API for application inference. A connection does not replace your evaluation or deployment review.
