Keep the human approval step: You reconcile every match in Xero. Claude only proposes.
Starter prompt
Goal: Cut the time month-end reconciliation takes while keeping a human on every match. Tools involved: Xero, Claude. Your part: lists the month’s bank transactions, invoices and payments; proposes matches with a reason for each, and lists the ones it can’t match. Work step by step, show me each draft or proposed change, and wait for my approval before anything is sent, published, signed, filed or changed in a live system.
Assembled from this page’s goal and steps. Paste it into your AI platform and adjust it to your situation.
Computed from the MCP and API steps only: "Confirmed" needs the tool's docs to name the platform and the platform to support the connection. Browser, upload and human steps work from any platform.
What we checked
Two Xero MCP servers. Xero’s open-source local server runs on your machine and needs a Xero developer account with a custom connection. Its tools include list-bank-transactions, list-invoices, list-payments and list-profit-and-loss. Xero also runs a remote MCP server; real organisations need the Core developer plan or above, and Starter-plan apps can try it only with the demo organisation.
No reconcile tool. Neither server lists a tool for reconciling a bank line, so Claude proposes matches and you reconcile in Xero. We also didn’t confirm whether list-bank-transactions can filter to unreconciled lines; if it can’t, ask for the month and tell Claude which lines are still open.
Writes. Both servers can create and update records. Xero says the remote server’s V1 tools don’t ask for confirmation, so tell Claude to check with you before any write. For this workflow, it shouldn’t write at all.
Set it up
Connect one Xero MCP server to Claude.
Ask for the month’s bank transactions, open invoices and bills, and payments.
Have Claude propose a match for each bank line with a reason, and list lines it can’t match.
