Question

What is Claude Code?

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Jan 15, 2027 5 sources
Short answer

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and connects to tools through MCP, from the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains, a desktop app or the web. It suits teams that want an AI agent working directly in their repository, with human review.

What it is

Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent. Where the Claude apps are built for chat, writing and analysis, Claude Code works inside a software project: it reads files, proposes and applies edits, runs commands and tests, and works with development tools. It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, in a desktop app and in the browser, where cloud sessions keep going after you disconnect.

How it works

  1. You start Claude Code in a project folder and describe the change.
  2. It plans, reads the relevant files and proposes edits; you approve commands and changes according to your permission settings.
  3. You add tools with claude mcp add; remote servers use the HTTP transport. That’s how Claude Code reaches GitHub, PostHog, ClickUp, Railway and other tools with official MCP servers.
  4. With the Claude in Chrome extension (on a direct Anthropic plan), it can open your web app, read console logs, fill forms and test flows using your logged-in browser.

Benefits

  • Works where code lives, so changes arrive as reviewable diffs on a branch.
  • One agent for coding, testing and checking the result in a browser.
  • Several tools publish setup steps for it, including GitHub, PostHog, ClickUp, Semrush, Railway and FactSet.

Limits and risks

  • Agent changes still need code review, tests and a pull request.
  • Shell access needs scoped permissions; see letting an agent act safely.
  • Plan access and usage limits change. Most surfaces need a Claude subscription or Anthropic Console account; Claude’s pricing page lists Claude Code in Pro, which is $17 a month billed annually or $20 monthly (checked 2026-10-17).
  • Compare it with OpenAI Codex; IonBin hasn’t tested the two head to head.
