Question

What is OpenAI Codex?

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Jan 15, 2027 4 sources
Short answer

Codex is OpenAI's coding agent. It runs locally through the Codex CLI and IDE extension, inside the ChatGPT app, and in Codex Cloud, where tasks run in isolated workspaces. Choose it by workflow fit, such as whether your team already works in ChatGPT and wants background cloud tasks.

What it is

Codex is OpenAI’s AI coding agent for writing, understanding, reviewing, debugging and automating software work. Like Claude Code, it reads a codebase, edits files and runs commands. Neither vendor’s docs compare the two, and IonBin hasn’t tested them head to head, so choose by the surfaces and workflow each documents.

How it works

  1. Locally, the Codex CLI and IDE extension read your repository, propose changes and run commands with your approval.
  2. In Codex Cloud, you hand off a task; it runs in its own isolated workspace built from a cloud environment you set up, and keeps going while your computer sleeps. Internet access is off during the agent phase unless you enable it.
  3. MCP servers (STDIO or streamable HTTP) are configured once in ~/.codex/config.toml and shared by the CLI, IDE extension and ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI’s docs don’t list Codex Cloud as sharing it.
  4. Plugins: some vendors publish Codex plugins; Railway’s packages its MCP server and skills.

Benefits

  • Cloud tasks suit parallel, well-specified work that runs in the background.
  • Fits teams already standardized on ChatGPT.
  • One MCP setup covers the CLI, IDE and desktop app.

Limits and risks

  • Cloud tasks run away from your computer, so they can’t use your local files, services or tools.
  • Changes still need review, tests and a pull request.
  • Plan limits change. OpenAI’s pricing page lists Codex as limited on Free and Go, included on Plus and expanded on Pro (checked 2026-10-17).
  • Compare it with Claude Code; IonBin hasn’t tested the two head to head.
