Need

Use GitHub as your business's source of truth

Short answer

Keep code, website content, SOPs and automation in GitHub repositories so every change has an author, a reason and a review. Pull requests gate what goes live, Actions automates checks and deploys, Issues and Projects track the work, and AI agents connect through GitHub's MCP server.

What it is

A “source of truth” is the one place where the current, approved version lives. For code that’s obviously a repository. You can keep website content, SOPs, prompts and agent instructions as Markdown files in GitHub too, for the same reasons: history, review and automation.

How it works

  1. Create a repository per area (site, SOPs, internal tools) and protect the main branch so changes need a pull request.
  2. Write docs as Markdown (see keeping SOPs as Markdown in GitHub).
  3. Review through pull requests; every change shows who, what and why.
  4. Automate with Actions: checks on every pull request, deploys on merge, scheduled jobs (see automating with GitHub Actions).
  5. Track work in Issues and Projects.
  6. Connect AI agents through GitHub’s MCP server so Claude, Codex, Cursor and others can read the repo and open pull requests for review.

Plan limits that matter here (checked 2026-10-16).

  • Private repositories: GitHub Free includes unlimited private repositories, but with a limited feature set. Protected branches, required reviewers and code owners in private repositories need GitHub Pro, Team or Enterprise. On Free, protected branches work only in public repositories.
  • Actions minutes: GitHub Free includes 2,000 minutes a month on GitHub-hosted runners for private repositories; Pro and Team include 3,000. Public repositories use Actions for free, and the minutes reset each billing cycle.

So if your SOPs or site live in a private repository and you want step 1’s branch protection, budget for a paid plan.

Benefits

  • Nothing goes live without review, and every past version stays in the history.
  • AI agents work against the same files your team does, with every change reviewable.
  • Deploys to Railway or Cloudflare can run automatically from merged changes once you connect them.

Limits and risks

  • Non-technical staff need a short onboarding to pull requests.
  • Never commit secrets; use Actions secrets and turn on secret scanning.
  • Large binary files (video, design files) belong elsewhere.
