Question

How do I track ops work in GitHub Issues and Projects?

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Jan 15, 2027 3 sources
Short answer

Open an issue for each piece of work, label it, and lay issues out in a Project as a table, board or roadmap with custom fields like owner, status and due date. It suits teams whose work already lives in GitHub; teams outside engineering may prefer ClickUp or monday.com.

What it is

Issues track individual tasks, bugs or requests. Projects arrange issues and pull requests into tables, boards or roadmaps with custom fields.

How it works

  1. Create issues with a clear title, a checklist and a label (for example content, site, ops). Break large work into sub-issues and mark dependencies.
  2. Add a Project and choose views: a board for status, a table for owners and dates, a roadmap for timing. Custom fields cover dates, single-select status and iterations.
  3. Link work. Pull requests that close an issue update it automatically.
  4. Automate. Built-in Project automations, the API or GitHub Actions can set status, add new items and archive finished ones.
  5. Let agents help. With GitHub’s MCP server, an agent can file issues from meeting notes or summarize what’s open. Limit it to the toolsets it needs.

Benefits

  • Work and code live together, so status is always current.
  • No extra tool for technical teams.
  • Agents can read and update the same backlog.

Limits and risks

  • Built for technical teams. It’s less suited to non-technical teams and client-facing work. Compare ClickUp and monday.com.
  • Broad permissions. Access follows repository permissions, which may be too broad for some work.
  • Agent writes need review. An agent that can open and close issues can also make a mess of the backlog. Start it read-only.
