Question

How do I connect AI agents to GitHub with MCP?

Draft · pending editorial review Verified Oct 16, 2026 Review by Jan 14, 2027 3 sources
Short answer

Use GitHub's official MCP server. It has a hosted remote option and a local option, with toolsets for repositories, issues, pull requests, Actions and Projects. Its README links install guides for Claude, Codex and Cursor among others. Start with read-only toolsets and fine-grained tokens.

What it is

GitHub’s MCP server gives AI agents structured access to GitHub: reading code, managing issues and pull requests, and checking Actions runs and Projects.

How it works

  1. Choose remote or local. The remote server is hosted by GitHub; the local server runs on your machine.
  2. Follow the client guide from the README: install guides exist for Claude (Desktop and Code), OpenAI Codex and Cursor, among others. Antigravity and Grok Bot setup are to verify.
  3. Limit toolsets. Enable only what you need (for example repos and issues), and use read-only mode to start.
  4. Use least-privilege tokens or OAuth scoped to the repositories involved.
  5. Keep a human merge step: agents open pull requests; people merge them.

Benefits

  • Agents can triage issues, summarize pull requests and diagnose failed workflows.
  • Same permissions model as your GitHub account.
  • Works across several AI platforms with one server.

Limits and risks

  • Write toolsets can change real repositories; protect main branches.
  • Content in issues and pull requests can carry prompt injection.
  • Token sprawl: rotate and scope tokens.
