Question

How do I keep SOPs and docs as Markdown in GitHub?

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Jan 15, 2027 6 sources
Short answer

Write each SOP as a Markdown file in a GitHub repository, organized by area, and change it only through pull requests. You get full history, named reviewers and a clean source that AI assistants can read. GitHub's web editor keeps it approachable for non-developers, and branch protection makes review mandatory.

What it is

“Docs as code” means treating documents like software: plain-text files, version control and review before publishing. Markdown keeps them readable as plain text and renders cleanly on GitHub.

How it works

  1. Create a repo such as sops, with folders per area (sales, support, finance).
  2. One SOP per file, with a short header (owner, last reviewed) and numbered steps. GitHub Flavored Markdown adds tables and task lists.
  3. Change through pull requests. The owner reviews, comments and approves. Branch protection on the main branch makes that review mandatory.
  4. Check automatically. An Actions workflow can flag broken links or missing owners.
  5. Feed your AI. Agents connected through GitHub’s MCP server, or a tool that reads the repo, can answer “how do we do X?” from the approved version. Run the MCP server in read-only mode when an agent only needs to read. Pair this with turning SOPs into custom assistants.

Benefits

  • One approved version, with a full audit trail.
  • AI assistants answer from the same text your team approved.
  • Plain text never locks you into one vendor.

Limits and risks

  • Some staff prefer a docs tool. GitHub’s web editor lowers the barrier, but expect some training.
  • Media needs a plan. Screenshots and video need a separate home or Git Large File Storage.
  • Access settings matter. A private repo is only as private as its access settings.
