Build a help center AI can use

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Apr 15, 2027 4 sources
Short answer

Write help articles that answer one question each, lead with the answer, use consistent terms, and carry an owner and review date. Content structured this way works better for customers, support AI and answer engines alike. Retire outdated articles instead of leaving them.

What it is

A help center is the set of articles that customers, support staff and AI tools all draw on. Support AI and agents can only be as accurate as that content, so the way you write and maintain articles decides how good the AI’s answers are.

How it works

  1. List the top questions from tickets and sales calls.
  2. Write one article per question: the short answer first, then the steps.
  3. Use the same terms for products, plans and features in every article.
  4. Tag articles by product and audience, and give each an owner and a review date.
  5. Make it reachable. Support AI such as Intercom’s draws on this content, and Intercom’s MCP server (US and EU workspaces, checked 2026-10-17) lets AI agents read your Intercom data. Docs workspaces offer MCP servers too: Notion hosts one that reads and updates what the signed-in user can access.
  6. Track which articles AI cites and which questions it can’t answer, then fill the gaps.

Benefits

  • Better self-service and AI answers.
  • Easier onboarding for new staff.
  • Content written for people also serves search. Google says its ranking systems prioritize helpful, reliable, people-first content, and that the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features.

Limits and risks

  • Outdated articles cause confident wrong answers. Retire them rather than leave them up.
  • Contradictions across articles confuse AI. One question, one current answer.
  • It needs ongoing ownership. An article without an owner goes stale.
