Answer engines

Draft · pending editorial review Verified Oct 16, 2026 Review by Jan 14, 2027 8 sources
Short answer

Answer engines search the web and reply with a written answer and citations, instead of a list of links. Perplexity is the purest example; ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok also answer with web search when it is switched on. For buyers they are research tools; for marketers they are a new place to be found.

What it is

An answer engine is a search product that writes the answer for you. It runs searches, reads the results and summarizes them, usually with links to the sources it used.

How it works

  1. You ask a question in plain language.
  2. The engine runs one or more searches, often splitting your question into several, then reads the top results.
  3. A language model writes an answer and attaches citations. Which index it searched is not always disclosed (practitioner view: Willison).

Benefits

  • Faster first-pass research with sources to check.
  • Good at summarizing a market or comparing options quickly.
  • For brands, a new discovery channel; see answer engine optimization.

Limits and risks

  • Answers vary between runs and between engines (practitioner view: Fishkin).
  • Citations can be stale or wrong; one practitioner saw an old URL cited two weeks after a redirect (Lily Ray).
  • Always open the source before you repeat a claim.
  • Plan names, prices and feature limits change often. This category page re-checks every 90 days; each tool page carries its own review date.
