A model router gives an application one interface to multiple models or hosting providers. Evaluate it on supported capabilities, provider controls, data handling and observed workload costs. OpenRouter is one documented option. Model selection and provider selection are separate decisions, and neither replaces an evaluation on your own tasks.
This is a software category, not an IonBin service offer. A gateway can reduce the integration work involved in trying different model APIs. It also adds a dependency and another participant in the data path.
You need to compare several models on the same task and rubric.
You want explicit host selection or a controlled fallback path.
You can maintain a shared interface while checking each model’s supported features.
Keep model identity, serving endpoint and fallback rules in the evaluation record. Check whether your required parameters are enforced, which hosts can receive requests and what happens when none qualifies. OpenRouter’s require_parameters defaults to false and allow_fallbacks to true, so set the controls that your task actually requires rather than assuming strict routing. Compare total cost per accepted result, including failed task attempts, rather than token price alone.
The provider-routing workflow turns these decisions into a proposed acceptance test. Its vendor capabilities are documented; its concrete configuration still needs an authenticated test.
An API-compatible request format does not make outputs or features interchangeable. Evaluate quality after a model or provider change. Review the router’s logging controls and the downstream provider’s terms separately; a policy filter does not settle every data-handling requirement.

Hand repeat admin (receipts, logs, notices, handoffs) to workflows your agent can trigger.
