Concept

Multi-model aggregator

Draft · pending editorial review Verified Oct 16, 2026 Review by Apr 14, 2027 3 sources
Short answer

A multi-model aggregator is a service that gives access to many AI models from different vendors through one account, interface or API. Examples include Gab AI, Perplexity and API routers such as OpenRouter. The business benefit is choice and flexibility; the cost is an extra party in your data path.

What it is

An aggregator sits between you and several model vendors. You pick a model (or let it route automatically), and the aggregator handles the vendor connection and billing.

How it works

  • Chat aggregators offer a model picker in one app.
  • API routers expose an OpenAI-style endpoint; you change the model name to switch vendors. Gab’s API and OpenRouter work this way.
  • Auto routing chooses a model for you based on the request; for repeatable results, pin a model id. Gab’s Auto mode, for example, classifies each request (coding work by difficulty, live-fact questions to a search-enabled model) and reports the model that actually ran in a response header; you’re billed for that model.
  • Per-model pricing: Perplexity’s Agent API offers models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI and others and publishes its own per-model token prices, which can differ from the vendors’ list prices.

Benefits

  • Compare models on your own tasks quickly.
  • Reach niche and open models alongside flagships.
  • Switch vendors with a config change instead of a rewrite.

Limits and risks

  • Data passes through an extra company; check its terms and each provider’s.
  • Routing can change which model answered.
  • Features unique to one vendor may not pass through.
