Agent platforms

Short answer

Agent platforms run AI that acts. They read files, call tools and work through multi-step tasks, in an app (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini), in an editor (Cursor) or in a terminal. Judge them on their harness: which tools and connectors they can use, how permissions work, and how you review their work.

What it is

The layer where AI does work rather than only answering. In our directory these are the tools marked agent platform. All of them except Grok, which is still to verify, can use MCP servers, so the agent-ready tools in your stack plug straight in.

How it works

The platform supplies the harness: tools, file access, connectors, memory and a loop. You give it a goal and access. It plans, acts and reports back. Our tool pages list which MCP servers each platform can use.

Benefits

  • Real actions in your systems, through connectors.
  • Reuse. One platform can work across your whole stack.
  • Choosing one. Start with the platform your team already uses as its assistant. Then check three things on its tool page: MCP client support, how permissions are granted, and whether you can review actions before they run.

Limits and risks

  • Access is the risk. Set permissions before connecting (see acting safely).
  • Harness quality varies more than model quality. Trial each platform on your own tasks.

Best-fit stacks

Stack 08

Dev, web & IT

Design, code, host and ship sites and internal tools, with an AI editor doing most of the typing.

Stack 06

Ops & admin automation

Hand repeat admin (receipts, logs, notices, handoffs) to workflows your agent can trigger.
