Question

How do I switch AI assistants without losing my context?

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Jan 15, 2027 3 sources
Short answer

Move the context, not just the account. Claude has a built-in memory import that pulls preferences and project details from another assistant. Beyond that, keep your durable context in files you own, such as instructions, style guides and SOPs in Markdown in GitHub or a notes vault, so any assistant can read them on day one.

What it is

Teams switch assistants for price, quality or vendor risk. The painful part isn’t the login; it’s re-teaching the new tool who you are and how you work.

How it works

  1. Use the import if there is one. In Claude, Settings > Memory > Start import gives you a prompt to run in your old assistant; you paste the answer back and review the extracted memories. Anthropic lists the import on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans (checked 2026-10-17).
  2. Export your history from the old tool for your records. In ChatGPT that’s Settings > Data controls > Export on personal plans; Business and Enterprise users ask their workspace owner (checked 2026-10-17).
  3. Promote the durable parts to files: a “how we write” guide, role instructions, product facts and SOPs. Store them in a GitHub repo or an Obsidian vault.
  4. Load those files into the new tool’s projects or custom instructions.
  5. Check a few known tasks to confirm the new assistant behaves as expected.

Benefits

  • Faster switching, and less vendor lock-in next time.
  • One source of truth that people and every AI tool can read.

Limits and risks

  • Imports are summaries. Review each extracted memory; delete anything sensitive or wrong.
  • Vendor-specific features don’t transfer, such as custom assistants and connectors. Rebuild them.
  • Vendor risk cuts both ways. Judge any vendor’s stability on evidence, not a creator’s switch video.
