Concept

AI Overviews and AI Mode (Google)

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Apr 15, 2027 2 sources
Short answer

AI Overviews and AI Mode are Google Search features that write AI answers with links to supporting pages. Google says there are no extra technical requirements or special markup to appear: a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Traffic from them is counted in Search Console's Web search type.

What it is

AI Overviews appear above results on some queries. Google says AI Mode is particularly helpful for queries that need further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons. Google says both may use “query fan-out”, running multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to build a response.

How it works

  1. Google runs one or more searches related to the query.
  2. Its models write a response and pick supporting links, often a wider set than classic results.
  3. To be eligible as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements.
  4. Site owners control inclusion with the usual tools: robots.txt for Googlebot, plus nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex.

Benefits

  • Another way for pages to be surfaced, including pages that don’t rank first.
  • No separate optimization program. Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files, special markup or special schema.org structured data.
  • Traffic shows up in Search Console’s existing Performance report.

Limits and risks

  • Google says AI Overviews appear only when its systems decide they add to classic Search, so they often don’t trigger.
  • AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so they can show different responses and links.
  • Search Console counts traffic from these features in the “Web” search type. Google’s guide doesn’t describe a separate AI-feature report (checked 2026-10-17).
  • Meeting every requirement doesn’t guarantee Google will crawl, index or show a page.
