Question

What's the difference between ChatGPT and the OpenAI API?

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Jan 15, 2027 4 sources
Short answer

ChatGPT is an app you subscribe to and use by chatting. The OpenAI API is a developer service billed by usage that lets your own software call OpenAI's models. Use ChatGPT for individual work and the API for automations, products and agents. The two have separate bills, limits and data terms, so a ChatGPT plan doesn't cover API use.

What it is

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s assistant app, sold as a monthly plan. The OpenAI API is a developer service that lets your own software, or an automation hub, send requests to OpenAI’s models and pay per token. People often assume a ChatGPT subscription covers both. It doesn’t. The same split applies to Claude and the Anthropic API, and to the Gemini app and the Gemini API. This page uses OpenAI as the example.

How it works

  1. ChatGPT. Sign in, pick a plan and chat. Features such as file uploads, memory and custom GPTs live in the app.
  2. API. Create a key on the developer platform, send requests from code or an automation tool, and pay for the tokens used. See what an API is.
  3. Limits. API usage has its own rate limits, counted in requests and tokens per minute, which rise as your account moves up usage tiers.

Plans, prices and data defaults (checked 2026-10-17). ChatGPT’s individual plans are Free, Go ($8 a month), Plus ($20 a month) and Pro (from $100 a month). OpenAI’s pricing page says content on those plans is used to train its models unless you opt out. OpenAI’s API docs say API data hasn’t been used for training since March 1, 2023, unless you opt in, and abuse-monitoring logs are kept for up to 30 days by default.

Benefits

  • Clarifies which bill covers what.
  • Helps you pick the right terms before you handle client data (see is it safe to put client data into AI?).
  • Explains why a ChatGPT subscription doesn’t power your automation flow.

Limits and risks

  • Plans change often. Names, prices and features are a dated snapshot.
  • Features don’t always match. Some app features don’t exist in the API, and the reverse.
  • Data terms differ by plan. Business and Enterprise plans have their own terms. Read them before you connect business data.
