Question

Can I track my ranking in ChatGPT the way I track Google rankings?

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Jan 15, 2027 4 sources
Short answer

Not precisely. AI answers change between runs, between engines and with small wording changes, so a single 'rank' is misleading. Track how often you are mentioned across a fixed set of realistic prompts, run repeatedly over time, and watch the trend rather than any one answer.

What it is

Rank tracking assumes a stable list of results. AI answers are generated fresh each time, which breaks that assumption.

How it works

  1. Write a prompt set that reflects how buyers actually ask, with several phrasings per need.
  2. Run each prompt several times across the engines your buyers use, through APIs or tools that use them; OpenAI’s terms prohibit programmatically extracting output from ChatGPT.
  3. Record whether you are mentioned, how, and which sources are cited.
  4. Compare mention rates month to month.

Benefits

  • Honest measurement instead of false precision.
  • Reveals which competitors and sources dominate.
  • Pairs with mention tracking off-platform (view: Fishkin on mention-gap analysis).

Limits and risks

  • Lists rarely repeat. In a SparkToro and Gumshoe study published 2026-01-28, fewer than 1 in 100 of 2,961 runs returned the same list of brands, and about 1 in 1,000 the same order (SparkToro). Rand Fishkin ran it with a researcher from Gumshoe.ai, a startup in AI visibility tracking, and flagged the possible conflict of interest himself.
  • People phrase the same need very differently. In the same study, 142 human-written prompts for one need were almost unrelated in wording, yet the leading brands still appeared in 55–77% of responses. That is why share of mentions is more useful than position.
  • Vendor ‘AI rank’ dashboards may hide this variance.
  • Engines change models and search layers without notice, and don’t say which search index they use (view: Willison).
