OAuth is the standard that lets you give one app limited access to your account in another app without sharing your password, as when you click 'Connect Google'. It is how most AI assistants and automation hubs connect to business tools. Review the permissions you grant, and revoke what you no longer use.
oauth.net calls OAuth 2.0 the industry-standard protocol for authorization. It issues access tokens that grant specific permissions (scopes) to an app on your behalf, so you never hand over your password.
OAuth and MCP. The MCP specification makes authorization optional. When a remote (HTTP-based) MCP server does use it, the server acts as an OAuth 2.1 resource server and the AI client acts as an OAuth client. That’s why connecting an AI assistant to a hosted MCP server often opens a familiar sign-in and consent screen. Local servers that run over stdio don’t use this flow. They typically get credentials from their environment instead.

Not tool-specific. See Agent-ready for connector support by tool.
Levels come from each tool's recorded, sourced compatibility. How the levels work.
