Guardrails
Guardrails are the rules and checks around an AI system that keep it within safe, allowed behavior: input filters, output checks, permission limits and human approvals. They do not make a model perfect; they limit the damage when it is wrong or manipulated.
What it is
IBM describes AI guardrails as the safeguards that keep AI systems operating safely, responsibly and within defined boundaries. They span policies, technical controls and monitoring. They range from instructions in the system prompt to separate moderation models, validators and access controls.
How it works
- Input checks screen requests and documents for disallowed content or injection attempts. Anthropic suggests a lightweight model as a “harmlessness screen”, plus input validation against known jailbreak patterns.
- Runtime limits restrict which tools and data the AI can reach.
- Output checks validate format, facts or policy before anything is shown or executed.
- Monitoring reviews outputs regularly for signs that something got through.
Examples of moderation models: OpenAI’s moderation endpoint (free to use, text and images) and Mistral’s moderation models, listed under “Moderation and safety models” in its docs. IonBin doesn’t rank them. Test any of them on your own content.
Benefits
- Reduces harmful, off-brand or non-compliant output.
- Makes risk reviews concrete.
- Lets teams expand AI use step by step.
Limits and risks
- Guardrails can be bypassed, so layer them. Anthropic suggests chaining safeguards.
- Too strict, and the tool becomes useless.
- They need testing like any other feature (see evals).
Agent compatibility
Not tool-specific. See Agent-ready for connector support by tool.
Levels come from each tool's recorded, sourced compatibility. How the levels work.
