Concept

Agentic commerce

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Apr 15, 2027 6 sources
Short answer

Agentic commerce means an AI agent finds, compares and pays for something on a person's or company's behalf. Open protocols now exist for it: the Agentic Commerce Protocol (created by Stripe, OpenAI and Meta), Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, and x402 for paying for web content or APIs per request. Sellers need clear prices, scope and checkout that a machine can read.

What it is

The buyer is increasingly software. An assistant asked to “find and book the best option” reads offers, compares them and, where it is allowed, completes the purchase.

How it works

  • Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). An open standard created by Stripe, OpenAI and Meta. In ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout, which OpenAI says is open to approved partners (checked 2026-10-17), ChatGPT calls the merchant’s ACP endpoints. The merchant calculates tax, accepts or declines the order and charges the payment on its own systems. Stripe’s shared payment tokens, in public preview, are scoped with usage and expiration limits.
  • Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Google’s open standard: the merchant stays the merchant of record and chooses which capabilities and extensions to support, over APIs, MCP or A2A.
  • x402. An open protocol that uses the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status, long reserved for future use, so an agent can pay for an API call or page automatically. Cloudflare documents it for charging for HTTP content and MCP tools.

Benefits

  • A new sales channel for products with clear, comparable offers.
  • Less friction for repeat and low-value purchases.
  • Standard rails. You implement a protocol once instead of one integration per assistant.

Limits and risks

  • Spending authority is the real risk. Give agents budgets, allow-lists and approval for anything above a threshold.
  • Early days. Protocols, eligibility and supported regions are changing month to month.
  • Forecasts are not facts. Market-size figures for agentic commerce are estimates; treat them as such.
