Components / Generative UI framework

OpenUI (Thesys)

Let a model compose approved interface components while your application keeps responsibility for data access, actions and recovery.

What this status means

Understand the resource

What it is.

OpenUI from Thesys describes an interface in a compact language that a renderer maps to components supplied by your application. It can support streamed charts, forms and other responses. The open-source framework and hosted services such as Gateway, correction and monitoring are separate parts of the decision.

When it is useful

Consider it when a useful response changes shape with the question: a comparison needs a table, a trend needs a chart, and a missing detail needs a form. It is a development framework requiring an application and backend, not a finished design tool.

A proposed application

Put it to work.

This example illustrates a possible use. The proposed workflow and expected result are separate from the bounded checks recorded below.

Try this

Build a synthetic SOP lookup prototype with only three allowed components: ProcedureSummary, SourceList and ClarifyingQuestion. Let a model choose a layout, but obtain the procedure text from a read-only server endpoint. Reject unsupported actions and show a plain-text fallback if rendering fails. Test empty, conflicting and incomplete responses before adding any write capability.

Result to aim for

A constrained prototype and an error log showing which responses render, which fall back and which actions are rejected. Use repeated test cases to judge reliability; the proposed prototype was not executed in this review.

Before you start

What you need.

  • A supported application stack, a defined component library and backend engineering; the documented starter requires Node.js 20 or later.
  • A model provider or local inference setup for generation; hosted paths may require accounts, API credentials and paid usage. Keep provider keys server-side.
  • Input validation, authorization, accessible components, failure handling and representative evaluation cases owned by the application team.

The practical boundaries

What to watch for.

  • Generated component choices and arguments remain untrusted input. Authorize every backend read and write independently of what the UI displays.
  • A syntactically valid response can still be misleading, inaccessible or wrong. Retain source context, failure states and a useful fallback.
  • The documentation describes installation telemetry enabled by default and runtime telemetry requiring opt-in. Confirm the behavior and opt-out settings for the exact package version you adopt.
  • Hosted model, correction and observability services add data-handling and cost decisions. Do not infer private-data suitability from a public preview.

Review record

What we could establish.

  • Why included: the GitHub weekly TypeScript trending list observed on 19 October 2026 listed thesysdev/openui with 1,288 stars gained that week. This is a dated platform signal, not independent evidence for its performance claims.
  • This review covers the Thesys project. The public comparison tabs switched as expected, but fixed previews cannot establish model generation, parser safety or production integration. Runtime coverage is therefore labelled limited.
  • The published token, speed and reliability benchmarks were not reproduced. GitHub repository/commit API probes returned 5xx responses; public README, license and documentation were available.
Source coverage and runtime coverage are separate

The source-review notes describe documentation and identity. The account-free evaluation below records exactly which public interaction or local fixture was checked, what happened, and what remains untested.

Check current access, terms, licensing and data handling before using a resource with your own material.

Runtime and security evaluation

What the evaluation covers.

Limited evaluationAccount-free ·

The fixed public Forms and Charts previews switched successfully. No SDK, model generation or tool-backed workflow was executed, so framework runtime and security behavior remain unverified.

Methods: Public HTTP response · Public browser sample · Source review. A completed check covers the stated sample; it is not a safety certification.

Version or capture
Public website snapshot observed 19 October 2026; no installed package version was evaluated.
Integrity scope
SHA-256 of the observed main-document response: 0391f4bc9f9f87c6727fb5140def7b00977d50c95abbbf5bc702d2a44f740759. This identifies one response, not all loaded assets or a reproducible SDK build.

Test conditions

  • Fresh Chromium 155.0.8059.82 context; 1280 by 900 viewport; no account or retained browser storage.
  • Only approved public HTTPS hosts and GET/HEAD requests allowed. Authentication/API paths, telemetry, writes, service workers and WebSockets blocked; no downloads accepted.

Individual checks and observations

  1. Public response

    pass

Public HTTP response: Read the public landing page and selected response headers without authentication.

Observed: HTTP 200 at https://www.openui.com/. Reachability does not establish product functionality.

  2. Fixed preview switching

    pass

Public browser sample: Select the Forms and Charts tabs and inspect selected state plus the visible comparison panel.

Observed: Both tabs became selected and displayed distinct panel content. These were fixed public examples; no prompt was submitted, live generation invoked or form completed.

  3. Architecture and security-boundary review

    pass

Source review: Read the published introduction, setup, queries/mutations, telemetry and reliability documentation.

Observed: The docs describe application-provided components/tools, server-side model credentials, possible incomplete output, installation telemetry enabled by default and runtime telemetry requiring opt-in. Those documented behaviors were not exercised as an installed SDK.

  4. Generation and integration

    not-run

Source review: Exclude model requests, package installation, Gateway and application-provided tools from this browser-only evaluation.

Observed: No model credentials, generated output, parser fixture, mutation, hosted correction, monitoring workspace or account permission was tested.

Security findings and boundaries

Passive public-response and documentation review with bounded browser interaction. No exploit testing, package audit or account-permission test.

Observed · info

Browser preview boundary

The page returned HTTP 200 with HSTS max-age=63072000. Eight requests were blocked, including a telemetry POST and off-allowlist assets; no page exception was recorded. This is not a complete traffic or transport audit.

Documented · caution

Generated interfaces can reach application tools

The queries/mutations guide describes a toolProvider that connects generated statements to application functions or an MCP client. Treat exposed tools as authority: constrain arguments and enforce permissions on the server.

Documented · caution

Installation telemetry is a separate decision

The telemetry guide says installation collection is enabled by default, while runtime telemetry is disabled until enabled. It documents OPENUI_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=1 or DO_NOT_TRACK=1 for opt-out. No package was installed to verify these controls.

Practical advice · caution

Rendering validation does not authorize an action

Restrict component and tool capabilities, validate server requests, keep credentials out of browser code and require a deliberate confirmation for consequential writes. Test malformed output and readable fallbacks before production use.

Practical caveats

  • Fixed previews demonstrate presentation changes, not a working end-to-end generation system.
  • A component allowlist helps constrain output but does not replace server authorization or content validation.
  • Evaluate your own component set, model, prompts and failure cases repeatedly; publisher benchmark results are not a prediction for your application.

What remains untested

  • No package installation, pinned parser/renderer fixture, model invocation or generated-interface interaction.
  • No account, Gateway, Autofix, monitoring, private data, MCP connection or backend query/mutation was used.
  • No attack simulation, complete accessibility audit, mobile check or independent benchmark replication.

Security limits

  • No penetration test, vulnerability scan, dependency audit, tenant isolation test or security certification.
  • Blocked analytics/API requests alter the normal site environment. These checks cannot describe all ordinary network activity.
