Question

What is Cursor best for?

Draft · pending editorial review Verified Oct 16, 2026 Review by Jan 14, 2027 5 sources
Short answer

Cursor is best for coding inside an editor with an AI agent beside you: planning and applying changes across files, running terminal commands, and checking UI changes in its built-in browser tool. Its CLI and cloud agents extend the same agent to the terminal and to background tasks.

What it is

Cursor is an AI code editor. Its agent plans and applies changes across a codebase, runs commands and can control a built-in browser. The same agent also runs in a CLI, and cloud agents handle tasks in the background.

How it works

  1. Open a repository and ask the agent for a change; review the diff before accepting.
  2. Use the browser tool to open your site, read console and network output, and click through a flow. Admins can restrict which origins it may visit.
  3. Add MCP servers (GitHub, PostHog, ClickUp, Railway, Semrush and others document Cursor setup) through mcp.json or the marketplace; the CLI shares that configuration.
  4. Send longer tasks to cloud agents, which can use your team’s MCP servers.

Benefits

  • Tight edit-review loop in a familiar editor.
  • Built-in browser checks catch UI regressions before review.
  • Strong vendor support: many tools publish Cursor MCP setup steps.

Limits and risks

  • Accepting large unreviewed changes is the main failure mode; keep pull requests and tests.
  • Plan limits and model access vary.
