Question

Can I run AI models on my own computer or server?

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Jan 15, 2027 5 sources
Short answer

Yes, with open-weight models. Tools such as Ollama download and run models like Microsoft Phi or Mistral Small on your own machine, and Hugging Face hosts many more. Local models keep data on hardware you control and have no per-token fees, but they're usually less capable than frontier models and need suitable hardware. Check each model's license.

What it is

Running models locally means inference happens on hardware you control instead of a vendor’s cloud. You need an open-weight model, whose files you can download, and a program that runs it.

How it works

  1. Pick an open-weight model sized for your hardware. Small models such as Microsoft’s Phi-4-mini or Mistral’s Ministral 3 (3B to 14B parameters) suit a laptop or a single server. Larger ones need much more memory.
  2. Install a local runner such as Ollama, or download weights from Hugging Face and serve them with tools such as vLLM.
  3. Test it on your real tasks and compare against a cloud model.
  4. For a team, host it on a server with access controls.

Licenses (checked 2026-10-17). Phi-4-mini-instruct is MIT-licensed. Mistral Small 4, Ministral 3 and Qwen3.8-27B are Apache 2.0. Other open models use custom licenses with their own conditions, so read each model card.

Benefits

  • Data stays local. Prompts don’t leave hardware you control.
  • No per-token fees. Spend is the hardware and power, which is predictable.
  • Offline and customizable. Works without an internet connection and can be fine-tuned.

Limits and risks

  • Less capable. Smaller models are weaker on complex tasks.
  • You run it. Security updates, monitoring and uptime are yours.
  • “Local” depends on the setup. Some runners also offer cloud models. Check where a given model runs before you send sensitive data.
  • Hardware varies. Requirements depend on model size and quantization. Check the model card before you buy hardware.
