Ask questions of local documents

Local document questions · checked 2026-10-18

Prepare a small document sample, attach it to a locally loaded model and verify each answer against the originals. Test the complete setup before treating it as offline.

Goal

Checked answers with source references and a recorded local configuration.

Steps

  1. Owner

Prepare readable documents and check extraction against the originals.

  3. Reviewer

Save checked answers with source references and unresolved gaps.

    Human stepConfirmed

Confirmed means the vendor documents it (linked). It doesn't mean IonBin has tested it. AI-platform and human steps need no source.

Human approval

A responsible person checks the source evidence and approves the output before it is used or shared.

Watch out for

A local model can hallucinate, and a remote tool can change the data boundary.

Starter prompt

Answer only from the attached documents. Identify the supporting passage and say when the answer is absent. Do not fill gaps from general knowledge.

Which AI platforms can run it

PlatformStatusWhy
LM Studio Confirmed This recipe is scoped to LM Studio. Its native connection is documented; human acceptance checks remain part of the method. This is not IonBin testing.

This recipe is limited to the named platform above. Confirmed describes its documented connection and proposed human steps, not a completed IonBin deployment test.

Prepare the experiment

Select a few authorized documents with known answers. Include a table, a longer document and a question whose answer is absent. Convert difficult material if needed and inspect the extracted text before attaching it. Download a compatible model and dependencies while online; record the model, runtime version and context setting so the experiment can be repeated.

Check the local boundary

LM Studio documents offline operation for prepared models, document chat and the local server. Review connected MCP servers, plugins and output synchronization separately, since those can introduce network activity. Run a harmless test with network access disconnected if offline use is a requirement. Avoid exposing the model server beyond the intended machine without access controls.

Evaluate the answers

Ask for the supporting passage with each answer. Open the original document to verify it; a generated citation can be wrong. Test both full-context and retrieval behavior on the kinds of documents you actually use. Record failures such as missing rows, incorrect dates and unsupported answers. Save only checked conclusions in the notes library, retaining source references and permission boundaries. This recipe is documentation-reviewed, not a claim that a particular model passed IonBin’s benchmark.
