Add voiceover to content

Short answer

Turn scripts and articles into natural-sounding audio for videos, courses and audio versions of posts. AI voice tools make this fast; check pronunciation of names and terms, and only clone a voice with explicit consent.

What it is

Voiceover turns a written script into narration for videos, courses, product demos and audio versions of articles. AI voice tools generate the narration from text, so you can produce and revise audio without booking a studio or re-recording every time a line changes.

How it works

  1. Finalize the script. Mark names, product terms and acronyms that a voice might mispronounce.
  2. Pick a voice. Use a stock voice from the tool’s library, or a clone of a voice you have the right to use (see the limits below).
  3. Fix pronunciation. ElevenLabs documents pronunciation dictionaries, and IPA spellings wrapped in slashes for its Eleven v4 model. It recommends testing important pronunciations with your chosen voice before you rely on them.
  4. Generate in sections and listen to all of it. Regenerate the lines that sound wrong. ElevenLabs documents request stitching to keep delivery consistent across chunks of a long script.
  5. Export and attach the audio to the video or article. A text-based editor such as Descript lets you edit narration alongside the video.

Benefits

  • A consistent voice across a series, without studio time.
  • Audio versions of written content for people who prefer to listen.
  • A script change becomes a regeneration, not a re-record.

Limits and risks

  • Consent is a hard rule. ElevenLabs’ Prohibited Use Policy bans cloning the voice of any living person without their explicit and informed consent or other valid authorization, and bans voice models built from recordings of anyone under 18. Its Instant Voice Cloning flow asks you to confirm you have the right and consent to clone the voice. A Professional Voice Clone can only be made of your own voice, after verification; someone else can create and verify theirs, then share it with you.
  • Descript is similar. Its terms prohibit using its AI voices to imitate a speaker who hasn’t consented.
  • Usage is metered. ElevenLabs plans come with a monthly credit allowance, so check the pricing page before a large project.
