Incrementality testing measures what your marketing actually caused. You hold back a random group of people or regions from the ads, compare outcomes with those who saw them, and count only the difference. It is the honest check on attribution dashboards and on AI-written reports that confuse correlation with impact.
Attribution credits sales to the last ad someone touched. Incrementality asks a harder question: would the sale have happened anyway? A lift study answers it with a holdout group.
Google Ads offers Conversion Lift studies based on users or on geography, subject to eligibility requirements (checked 2026-10-17). Its lift studies split the audience automatically into a group that sees the ads and a control group that doesn’t.
