Embeddings

Short answer

An embedding is a list of numbers that represents the meaning of a piece of text, an image or other data. Similar meanings produce similar numbers, so software can find related content by meaning instead of keywords. Embeddings power semantic search, recommendations, clustering and RAG.

What it is

Embeddings are vectors (lists of numbers) produced by an embedding model. OpenAI and Cohere offer embedding models. Anthropic doesn’t offer its own and points users to providers such as Voyage AI.

To give a sense of scale, OpenAI’s text-embedding-3-small returns 1,536 numbers per input by default, and text-embedding-3-large returns 3,072. A dimensions setting can shorten them.

How it works

  1. Send text to an embedding model and get back a vector.
  2. Store vectors for all your documents, often in a vector database.
  3. To search, embed the query and find the nearest stored vectors. Those are the closest in meaning.

Benefits

  • Search that understands synonyms and phrasing.
  • Group customer feedback or tickets by theme automatically.
  • A core building block of RAG.

Limits and risks

  • Vectors from different models aren’t comparable, so switching models means re-embedding everything.
  • Similar in meaning isn’t the same as correct or current.
  • Embedding sensitive data sends it to the provider unless you self-host the model.
  • Quality varies by language and domain. Test on your own content before committing.
