Concept

Content credentials (C2PA)

Verified Oct 17, 2026 Review by Apr 15, 2027 3 sources
Short answer

Content credentials are tamper-evident metadata attached to an image, video or audio file that record where it came from and how it was edited, including whether AI was used. They follow the C2PA open standard. They help audiences judge authenticity, but metadata can be stripped, so they are a signal, not proof.

What it is

C2PA (the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) publishes an open technical standard that lets publishers, creators and consumers establish the origin and edits of digital content. The resulting signed record is called Content Credentials, and C2PA describes it as working like a nutrition label for digital content.

How it works

  1. A capture device or editing tool signs the file with information about its origin.
  2. Each edit can add a new signed record.
  3. Viewers or platforms read the credentials to show the history. A visible “CR” pin signals that a file carries provenance information you can inspect.

Watermarks are a separate layer. Google’s SynthID embeds an imperceptible watermark in AI-generated content rather than attaching metadata. At I/O 2026 (May 19) Google said SynthID verification for images, video and audio was available in the Gemini app, where it had been used 50 million times, and that companies including OpenAI and Kakao are bringing SynthID to their AI-generated content. Google also said it is adding verification for C2PA Content Credentials.

Benefits

  • Lets you show audiences how a piece of media was made.
  • Supports honest labeling of AI-generated or AI-edited media.
  • It’s an open standard, so any tool can adopt it.

Limits and risks

  • Metadata can be stripped by re-saving, re-encoding or taking a screenshot.
  • Not all platforms display credentials.
  • A missing credential doesn’t mean a file is fake, and a present one shows history, not truth.
  • Support varies by tool and by export setting. We haven’t checked which tools in IonBin’s catalog attach credentials, so confirm in each tool’s docs before relying on it.
