Computer use lets an AI model operate a computer the way a person does: look at screenshots, move the mouse, click and type. It reaches apps that have no API. It is slower and more error-prone than an API, so use it for gaps, in a sandbox, with human approval for anything that matters.
Computer use is a tool type where the model receives screenshots and returns actions such as clicks and keystrokes. Anthropic documents a computer use toolset (screenshot, click, type, zoom and more) that runs in an environment you control. OpenAI documents computer use for operating browser and desktop interfaces. AWS offers Nova Act, a service for building agents that automate browser-based UI workflows.
OpenAI’s example uses an approval callback, so the application decides which actions are allowed before they run.
