Motion & effects / Animation engine and timeline toolkit
GSAP
Coordinate several animated properties on one timeline, with explicit control over timing and cleanup.
Understand the resource
What it is.
GSAP is a JavaScript animation engine built around tweens and timelines. A tween changes values over time; a timeline coordinates several tweens so an entrance, emphasis and exit can be adjusted as one sequence. It can work with ordinary JavaScript objects as well as DOM properties, which makes it useful beyond a particular UI framework. Its plugins cover additional tasks, but a successful core animation says nothing about every plugin or scroll interaction.
When it is useful
Use it for sequences whose timing matters across several elements, or for an existing site that needs animation without changing its component framework. It is especially useful when the effect needs to be paused, scrubbed, interrupted or reverted. Keep navigation and task completion independent of the sequence.
A proposed application
Put it to work.
This example illustrates a possible use. The proposed workflow and expected result are separate from the bounded checks recorded below.
Try this
Proposed workflow: a product walkthrough highlights three controls in order. Put the highlights on a paused timeline, advance only after the person selects Next, and revert all temporary styles when the walkthrough closes. When reduced motion is requested, show the current highlight without a moving transition. This walkthrough is a proposed application, not the tested fixture.
Result to aim for
A maintainable sequence with one timing model, deliberate interruption behavior and a cleanup path that restores the underlying interface.
Before you start
What you need.
- A JavaScript-capable page and a pinned core/plugin combination.
- Explicit ownership of timeline creation, cancellation and cleanup, including navigation away from the view.
- Review the current GSAP Standard License for the intended product; it is a custom license, not MIT.
The practical boundaries
What to watch for.
- The current no-charge license permits commercial website/interface use but restricts certain competing visual animation builders; no-charge does not mean unrestricted open-source licensing.
- A raw tween ran under reduced motion in the fixture. The authored matchMedia no-preference branch prevented its own animation branch from starting.
- Core tests do not establish ScrollTrigger, SplitText, SVG morphing or third-party plugin correctness.
Review record
What we could establish.
- Why included (2026-10-19): an established timeline engine with a broad adoption signal and a distinct custom-license boundary worth making visible. GitHub greensock/GSAP showed 29,475 stars; the inspected default-branch commit was dated 2026-04-13. This is one adoption/activity snapshot, not evidence of trend growth or safety.
- The proposed workflow above is an application idea. Executed checks and untested boundaries are stated separately in the evaluation.
The source-review notes describe documentation and identity. The account-free evaluation below records exactly which public interaction or local fixture was checked, what happened, and what remains untested.
Check current access, terms, licensing and data handling before using a resource with your own material.
Runtime and security evaluation
What the evaluation covers.
GSAP 3.15.0 passed four local checks: numeric seeking, sequential timeline positions, context style restoration and a consumer reduced-motion branch. Browser HTTP(S) and WebSocket requests were blocked; no plugins were exercised.
Methods: Local package fixture · Source review. A completed check covers the stated sample; it is not a safety certification.

Test conditions
- Chromium 155.0.8059.82; fresh disposable browser context, no account state or ambient credential variables.
- Synthetic inputs only; no uploads, purchases, accounts or private data.
- Pinned extracted assets/modules; browser HTTP(S) and WebSocket requests denied. No install/lifecycle scripts; no process-wide Node egress guarantee.
Individual checks and observations
Numeric interpolation
passLocal package fixture: Seek paused object tween at 0/0.5/1 seconds
Observed: [0,50,100]
Timeline sequencing
passLocal package fixture: Seek two sequential one-second tweens to 1.5 seconds
Observed: {"first":100,"second":100}
Context cleanup
passLocal package fixture: Seek transform/opacity then revert GSAP context
Observed: {"values":[0,50,100],"timeline":{"first":100,"second":100},"middle":{"x":50,"opacity":0.625},"restored":{"opacity":"0.25","transform":""}}
Consumer motion policy
passLocal package fixture: Compare raw tween with no-preference matchMedia branch
Observed: {"reduced":true,"rawRuns":true,"guardedBranch":false}
Plugin behavior
not-runLocal package fixture: Exercise scroll, text or SVG plugins
Observed: Only core GSAP was loaded; plugin behavior and integration remain untested.
Security findings and boundaries
Manifest/license and selected entry/source inspection, plus the named synthetic local fixture. No active exploitation or full security audit.
Observed · caution
Cleanup restored authored styles
The local context changed transform and opacity, then revert restored opacity 0.25 and removed its transform. Test the same ownership boundary when multiple systems can write styles.
Observed · caution
Reduced motion is not a universal core default
The raw tween advanced after reduced motion was requested. A separately authored no-preference matchMedia branch did not run; that is consumer policy, not blanket automatic suppression.
Documented · caution
Custom licensing affects tool builders
The linked Standard License restricts specified competing visual animation-building uses. Check those terms before embedding GSAP inside an editor or builder.
Observed · info
Pinned sample and network boundary
The fetched archive matched its registry SHA-512. The selected fixture made zero outbound attempts under an HTTP/WebSocket deny rule. No package lifecycle scripts executed; this does not audit all package code or dependencies.
Practical caveats
- Keep each view’s temporary animations in a cleanup scope and verify the state after closing or navigating.
- Do not make important copy or controls depend on a long timeline finishing.
What remains untested
- Only core GSAP 3.15.0 with synthetic objects and one DOM element.
- No plugin execution, framework adapter, touch/scroll behavior, performance benchmark or complete accessibility review.
Security limits
- No plugin execution, framework adapter, touch/scroll behavior, performance benchmark or complete accessibility review.
- No complete dependency/vulnerability audit, authenticated data access, server authorization, retention or production security certification.
