Memory and attention
Miller's Law and working memory
Keep needed information available instead of making people hold it in memory.
The idea in plain language
What it means.
Miller's famous seven-plus-or-minus-two discussion concerns particular judgment and memory tasks, including how meaningful chunks change recall. Later work by Cowan describes a smaller capacity under specified conditions. Neither paper supplies a navigation-item limit. A visible list can be searched and recognized without being memorized.
Evidence and interpretation
What supports it.
Memory research with task-dependent limits. Seven and four are not universal UI caps; grouping and external reminders are practical applications that still need usability testing.
From principle to interface
Where you could use it.
Proposed applications, not tested outcomes. The expected effects are hypotheses to check with realistic tasks and users.
Application 1
Review a booking
Keep dates, guests and the total visible on the review step, with direct links to edit each part.
Expected effect to test
The person can compare the decision against visible information.
Keep in view
Show the current values and include consequential conditions; a compact summary must not omit them.
Application 2
Compare tools
Let a visitor pin tools into a comparison table with aligned requirements and limits.
Expected effect to test
They can compare facts without remembering details from several pages.
Keep in view
Keep the table usable at narrow widths and provide labelled relationships for assistive technology.
Turn the idea into a check
Use it deliberately.
- Find steps that require remembering details from a previous screen.
- Group information by meaningful task concepts.
- Reuse information already entered within a process when appropriate, with a way to inspect and correct it.
Where the rule gets complicated
Keep the limits attached.
- Do not use seven, five or four as an automatic navigation ceiling.
- Chunking depends on familiarity; a category meaningful to an expert may not help a beginner.
- Memory demands also vary with interruption, stress and accessibility needs.
A named principle does not settle an accessibility requirement, prove a conversion lift or replace testing the particular interface.
Application and implementation boundaries
What the application check shows.
The example retained a visible review summary and could resume a synthetic note within the same tab. No memory-capacity experiment was performed.
Methods: Local application example. A completed check covers the stated sample; it is not a safety certification.
- Target
- Original IonBin synthetic interface example; no external product or human-participant study.
- Version or capture
- 2026-10-19 local fixture
- Integrity scope
- SHA-256 f85d1056afd667225a1e0364edfb8f25b4693ffa7b2b8c7d7af5b92338b85ee4 identifies the exact HTML fixture only.
Test conditions
- 155.0.8059.82 Chromium; fresh context with all network requests blocked.
- Synthetic inputs, memory-only state, reduced-motion preference, 1280px and 320px viewports.
Individual checks and observations
Persistent summary
passLocal application example: Exercise the original local application fixture and inspect the resulting controls or DOM state.
Observed: Changed input was echoed in a visible review summary.
Resume memory
passLocal application example: Exercise the original local application fixture and inspect the resulting controls or DOM state.
Observed: The draft could be resumed from explicitly scoped tab memory. No storage or account synchronization was used.
Security findings and boundaries
Review of the local example’s stated interaction boundaries; no backend, authentication, production permissions or external service was exercised.
Practical advice · caution
Persistence creates a separate data-handling decision
This fixture used memory only. Real autosave needs a retention scope, deletion behavior and safeguards for shared devices and sensitive fields.
Practical caveats
- Make important facts available during decisions; do not convert a memory heuristic into an arbitrary navigation limit.
What remains untested
- This checks an authored application example, not the truth, effect size or generality of the named principle.
- No users, assistive-technology participants, physical devices or production task outcomes were evaluated.
Security limits
- The example has no real authorization or persistence layer; its UI behavior cannot establish the security of a deployed workflow.
