Memory and attention
Von Restorff effect
A meaningful difference can help something stand out in memory. Make the difference worth noticing.
The idea in plain language
What it means.
An item that differs from a surrounding set can be remembered differently from the other items. The isolation effect concerns memory in context, and perceptual salience alone is not its complete explanation. In a UI, reserve distinction for meaningful information and state what the distinction means.
Evidence and interpretation
What supports it.
Experimental memory literature, with Hunt's original research discussion clarifying the role of similarity and distinctiveness. Better recall is not the same as comprehension, immediate attention or conversion.
From principle to interface
Where you could use it.
Proposed applications, not tested outcomes. The expected effects are hypotheses to check with realistic tasks and users.
Application 1
Flag a changed permission
In a review table, mark the newly requested permission with a Changed label and a concise explanation of its effect.
Expected effect to test
The change has a meaningful distinction from unchanged rows.
Keep in view
A badge is a cue, not proof that the person understood the permission.
Application 2
Identify the next workflow action
Give the next action a clear label and stronger visual emphasis while keeping secondary actions readable.
Expected effect to test
The action hierarchy is easier to interpret.
Keep in view
Do not make cancellation or a privacy-preserving option hard to see in order to favor the business outcome.
Turn the idea into a check
Use it deliberately.
- Tie emphasis to a specific meaning or decision.
- Keep the surrounding design consistent enough for the distinction to be useful.
- Use text or another visible cue alongside meaningful color differences.
Where the rule gets complicated
Keep the limits attached.
- The effect does not prove that every page needs exactly one bright button.
- Excessive badges and emphasis compete with one another.
- Test understanding and errors, not only whether users noticed the decoration.
A named principle does not settle an accessibility requirement, prove a conversion lift or replace testing the particular interface.
Application and implementation boundaries
What the application check shows.
The example exposed failure in text rather than depending on a distinctive color. We did not test whether the highlighted item was better remembered.
Methods: Local application example. A completed check covers the stated sample; it is not a safety certification.
- Target
- Original IonBin synthetic interface example; no external product or human-participant study.
- Version or capture
- 2026-10-19 local fixture
- Integrity scope
- SHA-256 f85d1056afd667225a1e0364edfb8f25b4693ffa7b2b8c7d7af5b92338b85ee4 identifies the exact HTML fixture only.
Test conditions
- 155.0.8059.82 Chromium; fresh context with all network requests blocked.
- Synthetic inputs, memory-only state, reduced-motion preference, 1280px and 320px viewports.
Individual checks and observations
No style order
passLocal application example: Exercise the original local application fixture and inspect the resulting controls or DOM state.
Observed: With authored CSS disabled, the named input and ordered process remained present.
Honest failure
passLocal application example: Exercise the original local application fixture and inspect the resulting controls or DOM state.
Observed: Failure was stated in text and did not erase the input or claim a successful save.
Security findings and boundaries
Review of the local example’s stated interaction boundaries; no backend, authentication, production permissions or external service was exercised.
Practical advice · caution
Emphasis must not obscure material choices
Do not make data-sharing consent vivid while hiding refusal or privacy controls. Attention is not informed authorization.
Practical caveats
- Evaluate label comprehension, contrast and errors alongside visual prominence.
What remains untested
- This checks an authored application example, not the truth, effect size or generality of the named principle.
- No users, assistive-technology participants, physical devices or production task outcomes were evaluated.
Security limits
- The example has no real authorization or persistence layer; its UI behavior cannot establish the security of a deployed workflow.
