Understand the connection before you use it

A useful tool.
A clear way in.

CLI tools and MCP servers help you get work done in different ways. Start with the task, see what the connection can do, and check the access it needs.

A command you give

CLI tools.

A command-line interface, or CLI, is a way to operate software by typing commands in a terminal. It helps when a task needs to be precise, repeated or included in a script. Some CLIs also let an AI agent read and change a project.

A capability your AI can call

MCP servers.

Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is a standard for connecting an AI application to tools and information. An MCP server exposes specific capabilities; a compatible host, such as an AI editor or app, decides how to use them. The server still needs the right account access and permissions.

One task, two routes

Imagine checking a project’s open issues.

With a CLI

  1. You or a script
  2. CLI program
  3. Tool and result

You type a command in a terminal, or include it in a script. The program asks the project service for issues and returns the result. You can choose flags to narrow the list or save the output.

Useful when you want a direct, repeatable operation. An AI agent can also invoke a CLI when its environment permits it.

With MCP

  1. You
  2. AI host
  3. MCP server
  4. Permitted tools and data

You ask a compatible AI application to find the issues. It discovers the connected server’s tools and calls one with the required arguments. The server talks to the project service and returns information to the AI.

Useful when the task spans conversation and connected information. The host and server determine the available tools and approval controls.

Access still matters

Either route may read sensitive information or change a live system. A familiar interface does not limit the account behind it. Check the tool’s permissions, the destination for data and how changes are approved.

Choose by the work

Find the right part of the guide.

CLI reviews
Programs invoked through written commands: uses, examples, installation, accounts and possible changes.
MCP reviews
Servers connecting AI hosts to tools and information: supported clients, authentication, exposed capabilities and data flow.
Skills.md
Reusable instructions and supporting files that guide an agent’s work. A skill may use a CLI or an MCP connection; it is a different part of the setup.
Tool directory
Broader product discovery when you are choosing the service or application itself.
